Earth Day 2024: Planet Vs Plastics

At Something Different, we are passionate about working to make a positive, sustainable impact on the planet. Our commitment to sustainability is now more important than ever, and it’s crucial for us as a business to continuously look for ways to develop our green strategies.
Our most recent green project was our investment in solar energy and becoming an energy-efficient organisation. Our warehouses are now powered by the electricity generated by 2000+ solar panels! The investment was completed in Summer 2023, and we’ll see 1.1kW of energy generated per year, which quates to over 650 Tonnes of CO2 emissions not admitted into the atmosphere. The theme for Earth Day 22nd April 2024 is ‘Planet vs Plastics’. So, how do we contribute to the global effort to reduce plastic?
Packing orders
We promote eco-conscious practices in packaging by using Eco Hex wrapping paper as an alternative to plastic bubble wrap to pack orders. We also use Eco Hex wrapping paper in our oil burner packaging as an alternative to polystyrene. Hex wrap is 100% recyclable and re-usable! The hexagon cells interlock together to provide effective cushioning and protection for our wide range of products during transit, ensuring they arrive safely while prioritising sustainability. Due to its unique design, it does not require tape or glue to seal the package!
Product packaging
We have eliminated plastic from our product packaging, opting instead for 100% fully recyclable cardboard. This eco-friendly choice not only reduces plastic waste and helps reduce carbon footprint, but also ensures that our packaging is easily recyclable while maintaining the quality and protection of our products. Here’s an example of how we improved our Queen Bee Ceramic Mug and Coaster Set.
Recycling
Sustainability is a team effort at our Head Offices, with all staff actively participating in recycling their waste. From paper and cardboard to plastic and glass, everyone plays a role in separating recyclables from general waste. We encourage every team member to contribute towards our collective effort in reducing landfill waste for a cleaner and more sustainable future.
